About the skip[]

Gelato Skip (GBS, Gelato Beach Skip) was discovered by Touval in February 2014 and is the largest skip in the game in terms of how much time it saves. It allows you to collect the eighth Shine Sprite from the first level of Gelato Beach. Once the eighth Shine Sprite is collected, any level can be entered.

Text Guide[]

Enter the first level of Gelato Beach. In order to perform the skip, a coconut must be brought to the cabana at the far end of the beach. You will notice a Shine Sprite in the middle of the cabana. This is the shine we are going to collect. There are two major steps in using the coconut to get to the shine: lining up and hovering.

Lining Up[]

In order to clip into the cabana, Mario runs against the coconut as it slides down the roof. To do this, Mario must be perfectly lined up. In this guide, we will use the roof to line up, but the fence can also be used.

Gelato Skip camera

Camera looking at Mario from the right

Place the coconut on the ground nearby. Sideflip and grab onto the roof of the cabana. If done correctly, Mario should immediately climb up and face toward the center of the cabana. Use the C-stick to ensure the camera is looking at Mario from the right, and then press the L-button to center the camera behind Mario. If the camera is looking at Mario from the left when you press the L-button, it will not line up correctly.

Mario must now jump down to the coconut while staying lined up. You can do this by jumping, and then only moving the Control Stick to move while Mario is in the air. Once you have reached the coconut, you need to pick it up and get back on the roof. You can either spin jump or triple jump to get up. In order to spin jump onto the roof while maintaining your angle, you should jump, spin the Control Stick while in the air, then jump again as soon as you land. If you have the Control Stick move before you jump or after you land, you could lose your angle, so this method can be difficult for a beginner. In order to triple jump onto the roof, you will need to jump back after picking up the coconut so you have room to perform the triple jump. This method is typically easier for a beginner.

Hovering[]

Where to stand on the roof

Now that you are lined up on the roof with the coconut, it is time for the second step of the skip. Move up the roof (while being careful to maintain your angle) until you are on the edge of the second row of tiles from the blender in the middle. Press X to switch to the Hover Nozzle if you are not already on it. Press B to drop the coconut and immediately start holding directly up on the Control Stick. Mario should be running into the coconut while the coconut pushes him down the roof. Just before Mario is completely off the roof, start holding R to hover and stop holding all the way forward on the Control Stick. If done correctly, Mario should now be clipped inside the roof. Move Mario slowly forward, staying clipped into the roof until you reach the center of the cabana where the blender is. Release R and Mario should fall down and collect the Shine Sprite.

Stuff that can go wrong[]

Running around the coconut[]

If Mario runs around the coconut and it does not push him down all the way, Mario was not lined up correctly. This could be because the camera was to the left of Mario when you pressed L instead of being to the right of Mario when you pressed L, or it could be because the angle was lost while picking up the coconut and bringing it to the roof. Make sure that every time you jump after getting the angle, the Control Stick is not being held except while Mario is in the air.

Not clipping[]

There are two possible reasons that could cause Mario to not clip into the roof at all after the coconut pushes him. It could be Mario was not standing in the right spot on the roof. There are certain places that can cause him to not clip due to how the coconut rolls down. The other reason is that Mario is hovering too early, making him go above the roof rather than clip into it.

Grabbing the ceiling[]

If Mario grabs the ceiling under the roof immediately after clipping, he is likely starting the hover too late. Alternatively, if he grabs the ceiling while moving forward after clipping, he is hovering forward too quickly. Try either not holding forward, or holding back slightly on the Control Stick as Mario moves up through the roof.
